Frequently Asked Questions
Can you give me an estimate?
Absolutely! We would be happy to send someone to your location and discuss your project. Most estimates take about 45 minutes to an hour and the visit is absolutely free. We want to have a thorough understanding of your wants and needs and create a plan to get you there.
I just want a color stain on my floor, very simple, with no engraving. Will you do this type of work?
Absolutely. We also like to leave the option of design open. Since it can be difficult to know what the end result will look like, sometimes changes in the original plan are necessary. Even if we already sealed it we can always come back and engrave a design.
What kind of staining products are available?
There are many products that are commonly used to color concrete. We use acid stains, water based stains, pigment stains, tinted sealers and dyes. Depending on the result you want, we will determine the best product for you. Concrete is imperfect and having knowledge of all these materials help us achieve a very successful design.
During what stage of construction does this work happen?
We work with existing concrete. It needs to be properly cured or the stains do not adhere or react properly. The condition of the concrete and where you are in the construction process tells us the best time to do our part. If your project is new construction we like to come in before paint is applied to the walls. If this is a remodel and there is already glue or paint on the floor, we can be one of the last trades to work on your project. We want to make sure that your concrete floor gets the best results possible and all of these criteria play into how we can achieve that goal.
How long does an average job take to complete?
Most jobs less than a 1000 square feet can be completed in a few days. If there is extra preparation work, that can add another day or two. The real issues determining the project duration are the environment, design details and your satisfaction with what has been done. Larger jobs, of course, can take weeks or months to complete.
I am interested in a non-slip surface, is this possible?
Yes. While sealing the surface, we can apply a slip resistant material. While it can be applied in any application, it is especially important where water might be present.
Why don’t we do estimates on the phone?
For one thing, the condition of the concrete can greatly affect the price. If it is chipped, has paint, rough surfaces or anything else that could affect the application of the stain, we need to know about it. Secondly, we want to know what you have in mind for a design. It’s also important that the design work well in its environment. That’s why we use artists; not just construction workers, to do the job.
Do you pour the concrete?
Can you repair my existing concrete?
Maybe. It really depends on the application, type of surface, specific problems, etc. In some cases, we might be able to work with the existing concrete and get a great result. If the concrete needs minor repairs we can handle it. If the concrete needs major repairs we have contractors we work with that can make it happen.
What is the difference between an engraved and a saw cut line?
A saw cut is used to create an expansion joint. Many companies also use this same cut to make decorative patterns. The result is many very thin, deep lines. We use an engraver that cuts a very shallow and wider line, similar to a grout or mortar joint. This technique allows us to take design further because we are only working in the surface of the concrete.
What if the concrete is already sealed, has carpet glue all over it, or has been painted?
This is one of the reasons we need to see the concrete to provide an estimate. Depending on whether the concrete is interior or exterior, we have methods to remove any of these materials.
What is your service area?
Generally, our area of service is Middle Tennessee. Depending on needs and budget, we can work well outside of those counties.
What is the smallest job you would consider?
The smallest job that is cost effective for you and Concrete Mystique Engraving really depends on the alternatives you are considering. Most of the time, 400 square feet is considered a minimum.
